THERE WE ARE HERE / FINAL UPDATE

Update December 12/ Final update

Before I start my final update blog I would love to say Motion Graphic class was such a great class to me. I’ve had no animation skills before at all. I’ve learned a lot and I gained a lot of skills working with After Effects. Some parts of the class were stressful and kind of hard but I made it to the end. Thanks to every one who helped me though my journey in class and a special thinks to Professor. Micheal for the help and patience.

Enjoy 🙂

Alright!! what is going on??

As you read along with the update, you would figured out that I’m going to animate my cartoon walking into different seasons. However, that was in in the process until issues come out on the way.

  • Issues that made me change the plane:
  1. I lost the .psd file cartoon character that represents winter season. I’m sure I saved it on my flash drive, but I couldn’t find it.

The winter .psd file is missing
The winter .psd file is missing
  2. The summer cartoon character when I imported it the Ae, it appeared half cartoon character.
  •  What I decided to do instead
  1. Re-do the cartoon character animation and make it waling a cross the screen.
  2. Make the mouth of the cartoon character talking and saying Oowee, it is party.

Check the animation video by download it from here OoWee, it is party

OR you can watch it on YouTube

This is the final version of the final asset that I animated

  1. I downloaded the audio to my computer. I used two audios, one is “OoWee” and the other is “Party time”. via this website

  2. I use the pen tool in Ps to cutout the mouth as first step to animate the mouth.

  3. I made the mouth in a separate layer in Ae
  4. I start to animated the character in Ae.

I found this tutorial of how to make a mouth talking in Ae

  • Animation Process
  1. By breaking character into individual layers in Photoshop, I import the cartoon character into After Effects after.
  2. I used the 3 null objects plus puppet tool replaced on:
    1. Head, left-right arm, left-right wrist.
    2. neck, tummy and waist
    3. left-right shoulder
    4. left-right elbow
    5. left-right foot
    6. left-right knee
  3. Then, I made each null object follow the different part of the body.
    1. Head > neck
    2. Neck > tummy
    3. Tummy > waist
    4. Waist goes to nothing because the waist is the center.
    5. left-right leg > waist
    6. left knee > left leg
    7. Right knee > right leg
    8. Left-right shoulder > neck

Here is where the null object connected the body parts
Here is where the null object connected the body parts
  4.  Then, I manage the end point of the right leg movement by using “*” at 0:00:01:01 because what comes after that is a copy past movement screen-shot-2016-12-18-at-1-03-38-pm
  5. Then, I used the puppet tool for the left leg “3 points”. and make the movement starts at the end point of the right leg movement.
  6. After I animate the legs, I started to puppet the body.
  7. I track the body movement by following the legs movements.
  8. It was so tough for me to match the movement of the body to the movement of the legs, so I sought help from the professor.
  9. Professor Micheal, told me to use a null object for each part of the cartoon character plus the puppet tool. I used this video as outside resource to help me out
  10. In addition to that, I used an expression that helped me to linked puppet points to null objects

charactern=thisComp.layer(“null_layer_name”)
nullpos=n.toComp(n.anchorPoint);
fromComp(nullpos);

14. After I made the cartoon character movement, I added the background that I built from internet collection using illustrator.

spring background

15. After that, I wasn’t happy with the result of the mouth movement so I searched for more tutorials. I found this outsource tutorial to help me out

16. After then, I render the animation; however, the audio didn’t render. This issue took me about half a day between watching tutorials and figured out how to fix it. Until, I came cross this wonderful tutorial which relieved my pain

Thanks again to everybody and I hope to see you again 🙂

WHAT WOULD I WANT TO DO NOW??

Update November 28

Today I worked on my Cartoon assets using Ps. I made two different Cartoon versions from the original. The first one is Winter Cartoon version, and the second is Summer Cartoon version.

Here are all the Cartoon versions

Spring Cartoon

Next, after all the assets are collected and built. It is time to animated them.

Update November 21

Lately, I was thinking of how I’m going to represent the final project and make a cool joke out of it as a result.

Professor. Micheal shared with me a very nice idea of how I would execute the joke. He mentioned that, I could make the cartoon character walking through different period of time that represented weather seasons.

Since then, I decided to look for an assets, such as background, clothes that represented seasons.

I used Illustrator to build a background. I collected the assets from the internet and I organized them together so it looks as one whole background

  • Here is the full background/summer

Update November 14

All right!!!!! Here is the first draft of the cartoon animation

Process:

  1. By breaking character into individual layers in Photoshop, I will apply the animation to each layer individually in After Effects after I export it.
  2. Import the .psd file to Ae.
  3. I used the null object to control the size of the each part of the cartoon character.
  4. Here is the null object controlling the size of the all body part

  5. Then, I used the puppet tool for the right leg “3 points”. Then, I manage the end point of the right leg movement by using “*”.

  7. Then, I used the puppet tool for the left leg “3 points”. and make the movement starts at the end point of the right leg movement.
  8. After I animate the legs, I started to puppet the body.
  9. I used 3 points for the body movement. One on the hip, the second point was on the center, and the last was on the top of the body.
  10. screen-shot-2016-11-11-at-4-56-18-pm
  11. I track the body movement by following the legs movements.
  12. I didn’t do the head yet.

Update November 7

Finally, I finished the cartoon asset using Ps. Next move now is, import the .psd file to Ae and start animated the asset.

screen-shot-2016-11-07-at-4-02-45-pm
This asset took me to draw about, 12 hours of work

Note: From now on, each step from Plane and Steps that I finished, I will write in front of it “DONE“.

  • Plane and Steps
  1. Draw a 2D character that I need for my animation GIF using Ps. DONE
  • Next, after I’m done with drawing the asset “cartoon”, I will do the following:
  1. By breaking character into individual layers in Photoshop, I will apply the animation to each layer individually in After Effects after I export it.
  2. Import the .psd file to Ae. “DONE”
  3. Apply the Ae puppet tool, and pins to each layer of the asset. (the pins will be used to control the character movement) “DONE”
  4. Once I’ve got the body movement animated over time, I would continuously loop the layers.
  5. I’ll try adding a shadow to give the animation more depth.

Update October 31

Introduction

After the professor asked us, WHAT NOW?? He didn’t mean What now movie for Kevin Hart, tho 😉 . He meant, what would you do with the skills that you learned in class through the semester.

  • What would I make

With all the skills the I have before and I learned in class, specially in Ae; I decided to make a small character animation using both Ps, and Ae.

  • Out sources

When I did my research finding the assets that I want to work with, I came across this website that has a smaller idea of what I’m willing to do.

  • Plane and Steps
  1. Draw a 2D character that I need for my animation GIF using Ps.
  2. By breaking character into individual layers in Photoshop, I will apply the animation to each layer individually in After Effects after I export it.
  3. Import the .psd file to Ae.
  4. Apply the Ae puppet tool, and pins to each layer of the asset. (the pins will be used to control the character movement)
  5. Once I’ve got the body movement animated over time, I would continuously loop the layers.
  6. I’ll try adding a shadow to give the animation more depth.

**I started drawing the asset using Ps, but it is not finished yet!!

Mask Tool – After Effect

The previous project was about, how to use a motion tacking tool in Ae. In this project, the professor, introduced us to how create and customized shapes and masks in After Effect.

  • Final piece using the mask tool, Ae

  • Prosess:

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-5-45-54-pm

  1. Draw a path using the shape tools or Pen tool.
  2. Using a null object instead of motion tracking tool.
  3. Replace the emoji face onto the object and make it follow the null object.
  4. screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-5-46-16-pm
  5. Reposition a shape by holding the spacebar or the middle mouse button while dragging.
  • Outside resources

–The end,

Motion tracking project

I used the clip from Elf movie when Peter Dinklage gets angry on Will Ferrell.  I worked with Motion tracking tool in After Effect. I used angry emoji face to replace the actor’s face.

View post on imgur.com

  • Process
  1. I download the clip from YouTube.
  2. I trimmed the clip using iMovie.
  3. screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-12-26-54-pm
  4. I import the clip to Ae.
  5. I used the track motion tool.
  6. screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-12-05-06-pm
  7.  Then, I export the file to Ps in order to make it as a GIF.
  8. screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-12-29-46-pm

  • OUTSIDE SURCES

  • issues
  1. I tried to add two emojis faces “heads” to the two of the characters, but I couldn’t. The issue was, every time I want to add a track motion to one of the faces, I couldn’t do it to the other face.

I also did this piece
